Media Items Relevant to EMCN’s Work

One of the useful features of the Staff area of the EMCN website is an option in the menu called "Media items relevant to EMCN's work". In this area you will find news articles filed under three headings: Immigration, Health and Housing, mostly from western Canadian news media, in chronological order.

Information Tray

Be sure to check out the information tray (located by the photocopier on the main floor of the 101 Street location) for lots of informative and interesting documents.

Celebrate International Human Rights Day, Dec 10 online! Inform yourself! Take action if you wish!

Please pass this message on to anyone that you think would be interested.

December 10 is the day in 1948 that the United Nation's General Assembly adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which has become a universal standard for defending and promoting human rights.*

An easy and very effective way to celebrate this day together with thousands of others is to go online to Amnesty International Canada's web site www.amnesty.ca and click on Write for Rights 2007, then on "Cases for Letterwriting."

There you will find 13 current cases of human rights abuse.

This web site will give you some idea of human rights abuses in various parts of the world including Canada, and how a simple action might make a difference.

For those who want to take action, there are instructions on how to write and send letters, faxes, and emails. (Note: the stanp prices are for mailing letters in Canada).

Under "Write-a-thon Q & A" you can click on "Check out some of our good news stories" to learn about a few of the hundreds of people who have thanked Amnesty for the letters, faxes, emails that helped them.

You don't even have to wait for Dec 10 ! You can write letters now and through Dec 10, and as long as that web site is active. Note that there are always some human rights cases available on this web site for anyone who would like to take action by writing.

Wishing you a very happy Human Rights Day!

Mary

Phone Burger King -to increase wages of workers

In roughly a week (a holiday week at that), 22,500 Oxfam supporters have joined with us in urging Burger King to increase farmworker wages. We can't thank you enough! But the fight is not over and we need you to do one more thing to make sure your voice is heard.

Please call Burger King at 1-305-378-3000 and tell them to join with McDonald's and other fast food chains in increasing farmworker wages. It's fast, easy, and puts additional pressure on Burger King to do the right thing.

Here are 5 simple steps to make your call as easy as possible.

1. Call 1-305-378-3000 and press 1 for English or 2 for Spanish
2. Politely tell them your name and that you're calling to ask that Burger King join with McDonald's and other fast food chains to improve wages for those who pick their tomatoes
3. Thank them for their time and hang up
4. Then, click below and tell us what they said http://act.oxfamamerica.org/campaign/burgerking_call1/b5dxusrydmext5?

It's as easy as that. A few minutes of your time could have a tremendous impact on poor farmworkers.

Thank you for your support!

Sincerely,
Tim Fullerton
