Reasonable Accommodation in Public Institutions: Is the Bouchard –Taylor Report a Realistic Option?
Speaker :
Marie McAndrew
Professor in the Department of Educational Administration and Foundations, at the University of Montreal
Founding Director of the Quebec Metropolis Centre
English Presentation
The Canada School of Public Service is pleased to welcome Marie McAndrew as a presenter in our partnership with Metropolis, an international network for comparative research and public policy development on migration, diversity, and immigrant integration in cities in Canada and around the world.
The work of the Bouchard -Taylor Commission and the events that led Quebec Premier Charest to establish it have touched off an important public debate in Canada on the relations between ethno-cultural communities in Canada and the Canadian mainstream. This is a deeply delicate subject that calls for not only sensitivity but, importantly, a deep concern for unbiased analysis and dispassionate action to ensure that Canada remains a harmonious society. Having carefully reviewed the events that led to the creation of the Quebec Consultation Commission on Accommodation Practices Related to Cultural Differences and some of the criticism the process aroused, Professor Marie McAndrew will present a critical analysis of the strengths and weaknesses of the Bouchard–Taylor Report, with regard to its normative positions and policy recommendations on the place of religious practices in the public sphere. Her analysis of the reactions to the Report from various sectors of Quebec and Canada will ground her assessment of the extent to which the Report will affect the public and political debate in the country and in the province.
Registration Deadline: June 26 2008 – 11:30 a.m. (ET)

Press Release – June 9, 2008: A Roomful of Missing Women
The Prostitution Awareness and Action Foundation of Edmonton (PAAFE), Edmonton Arts Council, Edmonton Community Foundation, and THE WORKS are pleased to present a stunning, multi-faceted and moving exhibition, A Roomful of Missing Women, created by artist Betty Kovacic, June 20 – July 2, 2008.
Bear witness to the lives of missing and murdered women from the world of survival sex. Kovacic's exhibition incorporates 50 portraits of women who disappeared from Vancouver's eastside and 50 shrouded life-size dolls. Each figure wears a banner inscribed with a lost hope, such as "As a child, I dreamed of freedom..." Written in different languages, these acknowledge that poverty and survival sex are global issues.
A Roomful of Missing Women will be displayed in the Edmonton room
(downstairs) of Stanley Milner Library across from Sir Winston Churchill Square. Exhibition hours are: Mon–Fri: 10 am–8 pm, Sat: 10
am–6 pm, and Sun: 1–5 pm. Closed Canada Day.
PAAFE will host a number of events to honor the many women who have been lost in the Edmonton area and to encourage public participation in addressing our local tragedy.
* A "peace room" adjacent to the Edmonton room in the library will be staffed by PAAFE volunteers during the exhibition. Visitors will have the opportunity to learn more about the missing and murdered women of Edmonton as well as existing services.
The artist, Betty Kovacic, will be on site during select times June 26-30 to meet with visitors. Materials will be available for visitors to record their own reactions through images or words. There will also be opportunity to participate in a unique video project.
* Expressions of loss and hope from local survivors, family, friends, and volunteers will be on display with the exhibition.
* An evening panel discussion, Confronting Exploitation of Vulnerable Women through Policing, Art, and Media, will be held on site Thurs, June 26 from 7 to 9 pm.
* An evening reception for Betty Kovacic will be held on site Fri, June 27 from 7-9 pm.
A Roomful of Missing Women portrays the poignancy of life and challenges the greater social conscience to take notice and become conscious enough to take action of behalf of women who are missing, murdered, and marginalized. The artist has dedicated her exhibition to "the missing women of Downtown Eastside Vancouver and to all women of all times and all places who have been or will be lost through violence."
PAAFE is committed to working through partnerships to create and pursue strategies that reduce the harm caused by sexual exploitation.
Our vision is a community where there is hope, respect and transformation.
