C2E Launches Provincial Election forum
Feb. 21, 2008
C2E launches online provincial election forum -All Greater Edmonton candidates now connected to regional voters
Connect2Edmonton.com (C2E), Edmonton's virtual public forum that encourages discussion and collaboration on topics of importance to Edmonton's future - has launched an innovative online forum for the current Alberta election.
Voters in Greater Edmonton now have an unprecedented opportunity to compare party platforms and conveniently engage all regional candidates.
And all provincial election candidates in Greater Edmonton now have a no-cost opportunity to communicate their policies and platforms to voters.
C2E's Alberta Election Forum 2008 will be live from Feb. 19 to March 7 (four days after the provincial election on March 3 to accommodate post-election discussion.) The special forum is divided into six categories (Alliance, Greens, Liberals, New Democrats, Progressive Conservatives and General Election Discussion) and moderated by C2E volunteers.
All declared candidates have been encouraged to participate in C2E's election forum, and several questions from C2E members are already posted in each constituency thread to stimulate issue-focused discussions. As well, all party leaders have been invited to submit a C2E guest column to explain how their party's policies will affect Greater Edmonton.
C2E's first online election forum for all Edmonton candidates in last year's municipal election generated an outpouring of participation from the public as well as many election candidates.
"C2E members believe elections are an opportunity for our region to intelligently debate new ideas," says Richard Skermer, C2E's Co-chair.
"We believe this provincial election forum will be as successful as C2E's online forum for last year's municipal election . which was a first for Alberta and perhaps all of Canada."
C2E currently has 2,850-plus registered members in 33 countries and 85,500 online postings on hundreds of different discussion threads. As well, C2E's interactive website continues to attract 40,000- plus unique visitors per month, has a considerable following among local media and community leaders, and increasingly influences Greater Edmonton's public agenda.
C2E receives promotional support from Edmonton Economic Development Corp., the City of Edmonton, Edmonton Airports, Edmonton Chamber of Commerce, Edmonton Chamber of Voluntary Organizations and the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT).
C2E is an autonomous, non-political, member-led organization maintained by a cadre of pro-Edmonton volunteers. Membership is free for everyone.
Visit www.connect2edmonton.ca to participate in C2E's Alberta Election 2008 Forum.

ISCC has put this together and invites you to use this as you see fit. ISCC asks that you let them know how you use it for learning purposes. If you are interested in creating a link from your website to ISCC website, ISCC would also welcome this. This will be posted on the AAISA website.
The Immigrant Sector Council of Calgary would like to disseminate this media release to inform Albertans of key immigrant issues and how it effects all Albertans leading into the provincial elections.
Key points are:
- labor shortages and the under utilization of immigrants in these areas
- an aging population/retirement -majority of immigrants are in their prime working ages of 35 years and how immigration enhances business innovation.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Alberta’s Labor Shortage Puts Dent in Provincial Prosperity Investing in Immigrants Will Help Secure Economy
CALGARY, February 19, 2008 – As Alberta goes into provincial elections we should ask ourselves what our government is doing to secure our quality of life in a province whose growth has surpassed the capacity of the province and services to support it. It is well known that Alberta is at a critical point of growth, labor market needs and securing a comfortable quality of life. It is not so well known how immigrants and the sector that serves them can contribute to this. The Immigrant Sector Council of Calgary (ISCC) and its member agencies serve more than 50,000 immigrants each year.
Agencies work with newcomers to facilitate their initial and long term settlement needs including finding employment in their fields and find Calgary to be a welcoming new home for their families. Statistics have shown that skilled immigrants will leave within 3-5 years if they have not found suitable employment in their fields. This should not be overlooked since it is important to Alberta for the following reasons:
- What Alberta Needs What Immigrants Can Offer
- 100,000 workers in next 10 years 24,000 new immigrants a year come to Alberta
- Skilled Labor 60-70% immigrants are highly educated, with diverse skill sets
- Workforce with younger employees to replace aging population and low birthrates Average age of new immigrant population is 35 years
- New tax payers needed to replace baby boomers Immigrants are net contributors to public services – paying in more than they take out – thus lowering the costs of maintaining these services for everyone
- Global competitiveness Immigration enhances business innovation.
- Creative and culturally diverse cities are said to be a factor in driving a vibrant economy
Let’s secure Alberta’s future by investing in immigrants!

CIIP India Clients Featured in RCI Web Cast Series
Dear Colleagues,
We are very pleased to inform you that Radio Canada International (RCI)is in the process of filming a series of webcasts featuring a CIIP family. RCI approached ACCC in search of an Indian family heading to Vancouver around mid-December. They wanted to track this family for 4-6 months and film approximately 20 web-casts. Fortunately, we were able to locate such a family and one that is quite dynamic and camera friendly. The principal applicant, Anshu Singh, and her husband and two daughters were introduced to RCI and filming got underway in India in December. The family landed in Surrey before Christmas and are now settling into the community and seeking work.
Several webcasts have been filmed, but only two have been posted thus far:
- City of Dreams: The Singh family discussing the pros and cons of leaving India and a glimpse of that beautiful country
- Preparing to Leave: The CIIP, its services and Anshu's reflections on participating (this also includes footage shot at DiverseCity)
"Inside India" not only has a snake charmer webcast but to top it off, it will soon include an 8 minute clip on CIIP and its services.
Anshu's meetings with her focal point referrals, S.U.C.C.E.S.S. and Vancouver Community College will be documented in subsequent webcasts to showcase Anshu exploring her career opportunities and accessing tools and resources that are available to support her labour market integration and settlement.
RCI is planning to hold a major event in Vancouver and Toronto during Asian Heritage Month. This will draw the Indian community and many stakeholders together to watch the first 3 web casts and to introduce the series. We are looking forward to tracking Anshu and her family and wish them all the success. If only we had this opportunity for all our clients, how much easier tracking would be!
We also want to extend a special thanks to our partners, DIVERSECity, S.U.C.C.E.S.S. and Vancouver Community College for their support and their willingness to help RCI draw the Indian community for the upcoming event.
We hope you enjoy the webcasts and look forward to any comments/feedback you may have.
Many warm regards,
Maha Surani

Toxic mine waste at the Oscars? No thanks.
Dear ,
A laggard bejewels the stars
In just a few days, Hollywood's celebrities will gather in L.A. for the Oscar awards ceremony. Many of the red-carpet stars will be outfitted in Harry Winston jewelry. Past Winston-wearers include Halle Berry, Angelina Jolie, Susan Sarandon, Renee Zellweger and Queen Latifah.
Stars don't shine wearing "dirty" gold
Unfortunately, the jeweler to the stars has yet to commit to sourcing its gold and precious metals from cleaner sources. Already, 28 major jewelers, including Tiffany & Co., Cartier, and Piaget, have signed on to the "Golden Rules" criteria for more responsible metals sourcing. So why is Harry Winston lagging behind?
Urge Harry Winston to do the right thing!
We've tried to get Harry Winston on board through letters, phone calls and in-person meetings. Now, we need your help to nudge them in the right direction. Please take action!
Take Action
Please urge Harry Winston's CEO and Chairman of the Board Thomas O'Neill to sign on to the "Golden Rules." Let them know that you care about the destructive impacts that irresponsible mining can have on people and the environment.
Sincerely,
Alan Septoff, Payal Sampat and Scott Cardiff
INSTRUCTIONS:
- Go to the action page.
- Read the sample letter and modify if you can. Personalized letter text and/or subject headers will increase the impact of your letter.
- Clicking "Send My Message" will send your letter via fax to Harry Winston
