Speaker from Sierra Leone

Greetings friends,

Abu (see below) will be speaking at the University of Alberta International Centre at 5pm Thursday Oct 18 (this Thursday). You are cordially invited to attend and hear from him about the situation in Sierra Leone at present and the changes that are hoped for with the new government elected in the summer.

Peace, Bob

ABU BRIMA

Mr. Abu Brima is the Executive Director of the Network Movement for Justice and Development (NMJD), a Sierra Leonean non-government development and civil society advocacy organization that has played a key role in multiple and integrated approaches to the peace process by calling for negotiations, accountability and justice in Sierra Leone. A trained educator and human rights activist, Mr. Brima served as a civil society representative at the peace negotiations in 1999 in Lomé, Togo. He is the main actor in Sierra Leone calling attention to the detrimental role that diamonds have played in fuelling the conflict and destroying life and the environment in Sierra Leone. He initiated the Campaign for Just Mining (CJM) and National Advocacy Coalition on Extractives (NACE) in Sierra Leone, the main civil society coalitions that are campaigning alongside Partnership Africa Canada and others in the battle to end the trade in conflict diamonds and irresponsible and environmentally destructive mining.

Massey Lectures with Alberto Manguel - October 19 in the Myer Horowitz Theatre

The University of Alberta is pleased to host the 2007 Massey Lecture featuring Alberto Manguel on Friday, October 19. The Edmonton lecture is the third in the Massey Lecture series.

Alberto Manguel takes a fresh look at some of the problems in modern societies - race riots in France, political murder in the Netherlands, bombings in Britain - all appear to be symptoms of multicultural experiment gone awry. In his book, The City of Words, Manguel suggests a fresh approach - look at what writers have to say, maybe books and stories hold secret keys to the human heart, keys that social planners can't find. Manguel is an award-winning essayist, novelist, anthologist and literary critic, and author of such books as The Dictionary of Imaginary Places, A History of Reading, and The Library at Night.

The Massey Lectures are co-sponsored by CBC Radio, House of Anansi Press, and Massey College in the University of Toronto. The lecture series was created in 1961 to honour Vincent Massey - the first Canadian-born governor general of Canada, and to provide a forum on radio where major contemporary thinkers could address some of the important issues of our time.

Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for students and seniors. Tickets are available through Ticketmaster or CBC Radio.
