United Way Campaign Final Results

Dear Ms. Rusich,

On February 12th the final results of the United Way's 2008 Annual Campaign will be announced to our community. With the abundance of media exposure we've all witnessed these past months, regarding our tough economy, I'm sure it won't come as a surprise that this has been an especially challenging year for fundraising.

With such significant impacts to our national and global economy, we realize almost everyone has been affected in one way or another. Our past year results speak volumes to the strength and overarching support of people like you who care deeply about the overall needs of everyone in our community. Although United Way's 2008 financial target was set early in the second quarter, well before downward economic trends, we have come very close to achieving our original goal raising more than 20.5 million dollars. We consider this to be a great achievement - one that we can all be proud of and felt it was important to communicate this news to you directly.

United Way has worked through difficult economic cycles in the past and as a mature strategic organization we have planned for "rainy days" such as these. As a result of our partnership with you we have built mechanisms to ensure we are well equipped, having ample knowledge and strength to sustain critical services in our community.

Our efforts in the coming year willbe fuelled by the notion that our work has never been more important than at this moment in tme. Please accept our very sincere thanks for your ongoing personal supporta nd dedication to our annual campaign. our work would not be possible without your unwavering commitment to United Way and our community. Together, we are making a difference.

Sincerely,
Oryssia Lennie
Chair, Board of Directors

Virtuescope Workshop

February 25, 4:00 to 5:15 p.m.

"When we change, the world changes."

All staff are invited to participate, experience and discover how powerful, natural inner resources can help you live, have more harmonious relationships and contribute greatly to your personal growth.

This session is offered FREE and is limited to 9 participants. It will be held in room 3-0 at 11713-82 Street from 4:00 to 5:15 p.m. on Wednesday, February 25. Please RSVP by Monday, February 23 by calling Ariela at 780-424-7709, ext. 254.

The Virtuescope is a "spiritual horoscope" or a "spiritual driver's license" that helps us in our spiritual growth during the upcoming year. Each participant is given an opportunity to select a virtue, from a deck of over 60 virtue cards, for each month of the year. During each month, the person can focus on that particular virtue during each day. Some examples of virtues might be: January: tolerance, February: love, March: peace, April: happiness, May: compassion, June: concentration, July: wisdom, Auguest: serenity, etc. On each card along with the virtue, is a short description of what the virtue means, which we read out so everyone gets a chance to experience the flavour of the virtue. As well, there are 6 special virtues selected that are applicable to the whole year. The cards are available for purchase ($9) if they wish, but participants are also given a list of all the cards with the descriptions of the virtues as well.

It is amazing how the virtues are somehow appropriate for the circumstances that we find ourselves faced with each month, during the year. It takes about 1 hour to complete the Virtuescope exercise. It is a VERY uplifting experience.

The Story of Stuff

From its extraction through sale, use and disposal, all the stuff in our lives affects communities at home and abroad, yet most of this is hidden from view. The Story of Stuff is a 20-minute, fast-paced, fact-filled look at the underside of our production and consumption patterns. The Story of Stuff exposes the connections between a huge number of environmental and social issues, and calls us together to create a more sustainable and just world. It'll teach you something, it'll make you laugh, and it just may change the way you look at all the stuff in your life forever.
