EMCN Mural Project

Ian Mulder reports that things are now at the real painting stage of the mural project...finally! Scheduled dates for the month of January are now set, at the studio across from Canada Place (10135 97 street):

  • Every Saturday, 10 am to 2 pm
  • Every Wednesday, 5:30-8:30 pm
Ian invites staff (and family of staff too) to come along and be a part of creating this work of art that will be mounted on the new building at 82 Street this spring. He has worked with seven artists from different cultural communities to create it and now there is lots of work for everyone to actually get it painted. He assures that no one needs to be a Picasso or da Vinci for this work.

International Week

One of the great treasures of life in Edmonton is the annual International Week presented by University of Alberta International. The week offers a rich variety of entertainment and workshops and presentations. All the details are available in booklets at EMCN main receptions and also online at www.iweek.ualberta.ca.

Alberta Advantage or Taking Advantage?

Friday, January 25, at CBC's Centre Stage in Edmonton Centre, there will be a panel called "Alberta Advantage or Taking Advantage?", to discuss issues about temporary foreign workers. This will be from Noon to 1 PM. Please let interested people know about it and encourage them to attend (unfortunately for staff it conflicts with our own staff meeting). The panel will include EMCN's Jim Gurnett and Shannon Marchand from Alberta Employment, Immigration and Industry.

Thanks and Commendations

Thanks and commendations to Wendy Martin and all the team at the day care for awesome hard work and grace under pressure in dealing with the Sunday evening flooding of the day care centre and all the extra work and complications that created. And thanks too to LINC teachers who managed to accommodate a number of pre-school extra folks in class Monday morning since it was not possible to contact families to let them know the centre would be closed.

Women Building Peace: What They Do, Why It Matters

by Sanam Naraghi Anderlini

This book explores the transformative nature of women's peace activism - with a focus on women's active participation in efforts taking place around the world. With an eye to bridging the divide between women's peacebuilding and that of the international peace and security community, Anderlini seeks to show how and why women's presence, activities, opinions, approaches, and resilience matter. Drawing on research and field experience, the author examines how gender sensitivity in programming can foster sustainable peace, providing concrete examples of how to draw on women's untapped potential in this regard.

Physical Activity @ Work Website: New Exercise Video for Your Hands and Wrists

http://www.centre4activeliving.ca/workplace/trr/tools/hands_atdesk.html

We often use our hands and wrists while we are at our desks, especially when we use computers. When we keep making the same movements, we could strain or even injure our hands and wrists. This five-minute video (the latest addition to the Physical Activity @ Work website) will help keep your hands and wrists strong and flexible.

Launch: WINTER Good Neighbour Cards

Safedmonton is excited to launch the Winter edition of the Good Neighbour Cards! Hopefully it won't be long until you find one in your mail box or even tucked under the windshield wiper of your vehicle.

The Good Neighbour Card is a concept inspired by the words of Jim Diers "in communities, people care for one another and the place they share." The Card is a way to show some one in your community that you care and appreciate what they do. This season's Card has changed in more ways than just it's winter neighbourhood image; the card also reads "Thanks for all you do!" so you can pass them along to all the great people you know that make the city of Edmonton a great place to live.

If you'd like to get some of these great little cards to send along to the people that you know deserve to be recognized send an email to safedmonton@edmonton.ca or call 996-6032.

Working together to build a Communities Agenda

Download CCEDNet's New Policy Brochure: Recommendations for revitalizing communities in Canada

Poverty, homelessness, environmental degradation, inadequate child care, and gaps in social programs are resulting in worsening conditions in many communities. Community economic development offers a holistic approach to tackling these issues. In order to be successful, it needs a supportive public policy environment.

CCEDNet joins with others concerned about growing social and economic inequality in Canada. These are our recommendations for implementing a community economic development approach to eliminating poverty and revitalizing communities. This is our case for change.

A Communities Agenda:
  1. Build Fairer and Stronger Local Economies
  2. Tackle Poverty and Homelessness
  3. Invest in Sustainable Communities
