EMCN Mural
The ideas and energy for the EMCN Mural are never ending! A group of committed and passionate artists have continued to meet over the last few months to design the mural, getting ideas from their own experiences and those who we work with at EMCN.
The EMCN Mural project artists include some of our LINC students, our Trinity Manor residents and some people outside of EMCN. It has been a great way to link artists from different cultural backgrounds (including the Ukraine, Japan, Uruguay, Iraq and China) and from different art traditions too.
Commenting on the design of the mural, one artist, Pedro, remarked “the steps represent the journey of an immigrant. It is always up and down when you start your life here in Canada.” When asking Toshiaki about his favorite part of the mural’s design, he said, “I don’t want to pick a favorite part. That is the point. We are connecting all of the ideas together, bringing together all people’s vision.” For Toshiaki, it was the integration of a number of different perspectives that brought real value to the design.
This project continues to be exciting with still more room for participation and ideas if you are interested in checking it out. Or, even if you just want to watch the painting, it will be done in a site close to EMCN, so stay tuned or contact Roxanne if you want more information.

Refugee Health Study
Refugees deal with many challenges in their lives before and after moving to Canada. Sometimes it is hard to handle these challenges without some help. Christopher Marusiak is doing a study to learn about the reasons refugees go to a counsellor for help, and how they feel about the help they are given. Christopher is a student at the University of Alberta and is working with Dr. Noorfarah Merali. His study will help counsellors try to meet the needs of refugees who come to them for help.
Christopher wants to talk with refugees who went to see a counsellor about challenges before or after coming to Canada. If you agree to be in the study, you will talk with Christopher about: 1) Your reasons for going to see a counsellor 2) What kind of help you wanted from the counsellor 3) Whether the counselling helped you
Someone who speaks your language can be there to help you talk with him if you need it.
The meeting will take one and a half hours. It will be at a time that works best for you. Everything you talk about will be private.
We would like you to participate if 1) You have seen a counsellor in the last 5 years 2) You are at least 18 years old 3) You have been living in Canada for 2 years or more.
If you would like to be part of this study, please call Christopher at 492-3746. Or you can talk to Roxanne at 423-9517 if you want more information or she can provide your contact information to Christopher and he will call you. Then, he will arrange a time and place to talk with you.

Policy Channel
Cambridge Strategies, an Edmonton-based consulting firm specializing in public-policy work, has started to assess Albertans' views about issues related to oil-sand development. The study, which helps identify what respondents consider to be responsible development of the oil sands, has attracted more than 2,000 responses but they are hoping for 5,000 and wants to ensure that people from the not-for-profit sector and those we work with are included in those responses. The survey takes about 10 minutes and is located at www.policychannel.com.
