March and Rally For Affordable Housing

Albertans Demand Affordable Housing is organizing a march and rally for Saturday, August 18, 2007. People will be meeting at the south end of the fountain at City Hall at 1 pm and marching to the Alberta Legislature with the rally program beginning at about 2 pm.
The program will consist of a range of speakers and several local artists and musicians. The presenters will question the economic boom and its neglect to reach a growing segment of Alberta’s population, particularly in regards to housing.
Meet at City Hall at 12:45 pm
Depart at 1 pm
Arrive at Legislature at 1:45 pm
Rally at 2 pm

Biography
Shula Koenig is the founding president of the People’s Movement for Human Rights Learning. She worked successfully to have the UN declare a Decade for Human Rights Education and developed international public policy to enhance this learning worldwide.
To demonstrate the practical values of the vision and mission of human rights, Koenig has initiated and facilitated the “Human Rights Cities” initiative, of one of them is Edmonton! With her colleagues, she is working to develop over 30 human rights cities and create a new vocation: human rights learning at the community level, starting with 500 young community leaders to strengthen democracy as a delivery system for human rights. In 2003, Koenig received the United Nations Award for Outstanding Achievement in the Field of Human Rights.

ESL Database - Volunteers Needed
Johanne Paradis is looking to create a database that will help teachers and speech language pathologists assess the language skills of children who are learning English as a second language. We are again looking for assistance with recruitment and I was wondering if you would be interested in helping us. We are looking for children aged 5 or 6 years and who have been learning English for 3 years or less. Children should speak one of the following languages: Arabic, Cantonese, Hindi, Mandarin, Portuguese, Punjabi, Spanish, Urdu.
I should also mention that participating families are given an honorarium to show our appreciation for their time.

AFFORDABLE HOUSING FILM TO PREMIER IN EDMONTON
*"Bridge To Community: The Affordable Housing Crisis in Alberta" is a locally produced feature length documentary (85 minutes in length) focused on the affordable housing situation in Calgary and Alberta.
*The film will be premier at the Metro Cinema in Edmonton on July 22nd **at 2:00PM.**
The documentary film has been in production for over a year and has closely followed the crisis in affordable housing through it's various phases and as a result has brought together a fascinating and insightful mix of people, ideas, events and images which examines the social cost of homelessness, the impact of apartments being converted to condos and the rising rents , and how the lack of affordable accomodation for ordinary people is affecting the economy. The film also looks at the political reaction to the lack of response on the part of the city and provincial government to effectively deal with this problem. The film brings together homeless people, the working poor, activists, organizations lke CUPS, Inn From the Cold, the Calgary Homeless Foundation, architects, academics, ban planners, church groups, local and provincial politicans, and many others in a stirring and informative social documentary on a subject which has affected a great number of people. Also features the music of artists: Andrea Revel, Lara Taillon and Meg Wilkie.
Brent Spiess, the filmmaker will be in attendance to answer questions after the screening.
