First Aid Training

First Aid Training is very important both personally and professionally. One never knows when an emergency will arise in their family, community or at work. Please consider taking First Aid for your personal and professional benefit.

Nicole Stogrin will be offering two first aid classes, (two days) one will be held Saturday and Sunday, May 24, 25. The second will be held Friday, June 13, and Saturday, June 14. Both will be held from 9 - 4;30 pm.

The May 24, 25 session will take place at the 97 Street Location on the main floor, reception area.

The second session, June 13 and 14 will take place at HQ in room 2-4.

The first session is designated for clients as an Exposure Course, therefor employment counselors need to follow the process of advising clients to see Jimmy to have them pay half the deposit, etc.

Staff may take this course at this time as well (EMCN will pay the cost of the course and staff may claim one day in lieu of hours worked). The second day will be on your own time.
Please get approval from your manager. Once approval has been granted let me know so I can reserve a space. We need a minimum of 10 people to run the courses.

The second training is designated for staff, however counselors can also refer clients for this training as well. As it takes place on Friday, staff will be paid for this day, however the Saturday training is on your own time.

The training is two days and those who register are expected to attend both days. The cost of the training is approximately $150 per person. If we do not have sufficient numbers the training will be cancelled.

I plan to register for the second training. Let me know if you have any questions.

Parking at the Wentworth Location

Hello everyone,

We seem to be having some ongoing issues with people who are taking their cars to our Wentworth location. These stalls are paid for in part by the staff who work at the Wentworth location and are meant to be reserved for their use. Furthermore, many of the staff at the Wentworth location must remain mobile and having access in and out of their parking is important.

Please, if you visit the the Wentworth building for any reason, do not park in the stalls designated for EMCN staff without asking permission and then informing the onsite staff. They are willing to accommodate other staff members from time-to-time, but depend on your cooperation and consideration in order to be flexible. If there are no available spots available, their are two lots directly behind the building and several parking meters in the area.

Effective May 1st, 2008: all unidentified cars parked in the EMCN parking at the Wentworth building (10211-97 Street) between 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. will be tagged and towed automatically.

Thanks (for your anticipated cooperation!),

Derrick Schmuhl

Torture Tour of Toronto

Thursday, May 1, 9 am-2 pm

The Caravan to End Canadian Involvement in Torture kicks off with a torture tour of Toronto on Thursday, May 1, beginning at 9 am. What, exactly, IS a torture tour of Toronto?

It's an opportunity for us to publicily name corporations and government entities that are complicit, either directly or indirectly, in acts of torture. That complicity may be contracting with the government to deport to torture those held under the unconstitutional secret hearing "security certificates" ; it may be an "intelligence agency" that sent questions to torturers in Syria and Egypt who used those questions to torture Canadian citizens; it may be war manufacturers who are part of corporate empires that include private "interrogation" teams implicated in torture and murder in places like Abu Ghraib, Bagram Air Force Base, and Guantanamo Bay.

The May 1 Torture Tour of Toronto kicks off the Caravan to End Canadian Involvement in Torture, which will be spending the following eight days on the road to Ottawa, engaged in educational efforts and public action to call for an end to Canadian complicity in torture.

To reserve a seat on the torture tour, call (416) 651-5800 or tasc@web.ca
